How TPO keeps water out

TPO is a reinforced plastic roofing membrane. Its full name is thermoplastic polyolefin. Heat joins overlapping sheets into welded seams, creating a continuous surface that carries rain to the roof's outlets.

Repair or replace the existing roof?

Keep suitable existing material

An isolated opening at a seam or equipment curb can be repaired when the TPO and layers around it remain sound. Installing a new roof over an existing one needs a wider check of moisture, support and attachment before those layers are kept.

Remove wet or weakened layers

Wet insulation and loose roofing shouldn't be covered up. Those layers need attention before a new membrane goes down, even if the old surface still looks tidy.

What goes beneath and around TPO

Wood or structural deck

The deck has to hold the chosen attachment. Wet or deteriorated material needs attention, then insulation and any cover board create the surface beneath the membrane.

Slope to the drains

Tapered insulation and raised sections called crickets can direct water around equipment toward outlets. A new membrane follows the shape below it, so it won't remove a low spot on its own.

Membrane attachment

The selected roof can use mechanical fasteners, adhesive or another approved method. Its fastening, seams and edge details need to work together under that system's requirements.

Curbs, pipes and access

Flashing seals the membrane to drains, walls and equipment supports. Walkway protection helps keep regular service traffic from wearing or puncturing the roof.
